Oryx and Crake is an odd book about genetic modification of animals for the betterment of man kinda. But the best part of the book is it's name for the people and the animals. The book it's self starts with the snowman who is the only one left from his kind left, the human races is gone after a disease wiped out all of the human race or at least that what the snowman thought. There is a new race called the Children of Crake which are genetically modified human made by the main character childhood friends/ boss. And boy is it weird.
I think really that how you could sum up this book it really good and will keep you on the edge of your seat however it's like oddly sexual and has a lot of mentions of child porn. But like Raccoon skunk hybrids sound stupid cute and I would 100% love to have one!!! Killer is best gurl and I would have been way less chill with my crazy freedom terror-its mother taking my baby and releases her into the wild. He mother also ruined his life by putting a smug on his name, he had the guards coming to interview him constantly to see if he knew anything about his moms whereabouts. The worst part about it is that he looks back on her fondly?! Like my mother hates my grandmother for so much less, like what the hell, If I where him I would never forgive her,
She's also a child abuser, emotional neglect is actual a form of child abuse, it's defined as purposefully ignoring your child or not providing proper mental and social stimulation is an actual form of neglect and she does this in the book. Also when he mentions how he had to make himself lunch most days because she was so out of it with her mental illness or depression, that is also another form of neglect as well, that straight neglect and it reminds me a lot of 'The Glass Castle ' where the main character in that set herself on fire trying to make hot dogs. Overall children should never have to cook and prepare themselves food, especially without parental supervision. It is unsafe and not something any child should have to do before they are above the age of 12 and even then it should only be sandwiches and microwavable food, with no knives.
Ok Another thing the mother does is verbally abuse her son by calling him names and putting him down. She tries to justify this by using her depression/ mental illness as a crutch, yet she has every opportunity to either get help and treatment or assistance but no she doesn't go to a compound doctor and she fires the nanny because 'she home now and he now has his real mother to take care of him. The Mom does not do any of the things the nanny did and put both him and his father in a horrible situation, the mom doesn't even cook dinner even tho she shits around at home and smokes all day, she's a horrible roll model an poor mother and an even worse wife.
Overall I think a lot of the poor things in the main character life could probably be cause by trama he experiences as a child, and I think one of the main reasons he never wanted a family or to settle down is because he fears to turn out like his mother and father. It also maybe a factor as to why he doesn't stay inside the children of Crakes village, because he fears to disappoint them as a parental figure.
