Altered Carbon Can Get It

Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon is a Scifi detective book about a man named Takahashi who at the beginning of the story is put into storage for over 100 years after killing a bunch of cops with his partner Sarah. Later he is needled casted to earth by a rich Mith , that  claimed to have been murdered after being found dead in his highly secured mansion.
What I found the most interesting about this book was it's handling of consciousnesses and memories, The way it defined what made a person and what about them was valued. In Altered Carbon what is valued most about people is there Stacks, The civilization views human bodies as an asset or physical position, not something they have in inert right to own or connected to. It's an intresting premise overall, tho i find it funny how little robots and Ai are played down in the book, The Ai that runs the hotel is sentient however is not portable and is stuck in larger buildings. I kinda find it odd that people can switch and move between bodies but AI are put into large structures. But That might be modern day bias
Now of days there is this heavy push for AI sentience and person hood. The notion  of when is something truly alive and desiring of rights. It's and intresting construct, that I love seeing pushed in media, between psycho androids that have split violent personalities in Evolve, to ghost in a shell the idea of robots with person hood is one of my favorite tropes in Sci fi and you can kind of get glimpses of it here.
Overall I really Like Altered Carbon and might end up reading it's sequels if I get time to kill. It Might not be about robots, but if you squint a little it does pave the way for the later robot biased works of the present.
